Exhaust Repair in Northampton
What Modern Cars Actually Need

Exhaust repair has changed significantly in the last fifteen years. The days of full exhaust replacements on every ageing family car are mostly behind us — modern stainless steel exhausts are far more durable and corrosion-resistant than the mild steel systems fitted to older vehicles. Most modern cars will go the life of the vehicle without ever needing a full exhaust.

What modern cars do need are the repairs that come with the components unique to them: flexi pipe replacement (the most common exhaust repair we see on modern cars), DPF cleaning and repair, catalytic converter faults, manifold gasket leaks, and lambda sensor replacements. These are the exhaust jobs that fill our ramp at Alderley Autos — not full systems.

We're honest about this because it matters to you. If your exhaust is noisy but structurally sound with a failed flexi pipe, we'll weld or replace the flexi — we won't tell you the whole exhaust needs replacing. If your DPF is partially blocked and can be cleaned, we'll clean it rather than quote you for a replacement. That's how we work.

The Exhaust System — Left to Right

Manifold Collects exhaust gases from cylinders
Flexi Pipe Most common repair on modern cars
CAT / DPF Emissions control
Centre Pipe Carries gases rearward
Silencer / Box Reduces noise

Red sections are the most common repair areas on modern vehicles.

Exhaust faults and your MOT. An excessively noisy exhaust, a significant leak, a corroded-through section, a missing or non-functioning catalytic converter, or a blocked/removed DPF on a diesel will all fail an MOT. We carry out exhaust repairs and can arrange the retest same day in most cases.

Exhaust Services We Carry Out

The most common exhaust work on modern cars — diagnosed accurately and repaired properly.

Flexi Pipe Repair & Replacement

The flexi pipe is a braided flexible section positioned close to the engine that absorbs engine movement and vibration. It is the most common exhaust repair we carry out on modern cars. When it fails, you'll typically hear a loud droning or rattling noise that changes with engine speed. We weld or replace flexi pipes on all makes and models.

DPF Cleaning & Repair

Diesel Particulate Filters trap soot from the exhaust. They self-clean via a process called regeneration, but this requires the engine to reach a sustained high temperature — something short city journeys often prevent. A blocked DPF triggers a warning light, reduces power, increases fuel consumption, and is an MOT failure. We diagnose DPF condition and carry out forced regeneration or professional cleaning before recommending replacement.

Common on diesel city cars

Catalytic Converter Repair

The catalytic converter converts harmful exhaust gases into less harmful emissions. It can fail mechanically (internal substrate collapse causing rattling) or chemically (contamination from oil burning or coolant leak). It also has lambda sensors attached that can fail independently. We diagnose whether it is the CAT itself or a sensor, manifold or flexi failure causing the problem before recommending replacement — many CATs are condemned unnecessarily.

MOT failure if non-functional

Manifold Gasket & Downpipe

The exhaust manifold sits directly on the engine head and collects exhaust gases from each cylinder. The gasket between the manifold and head can fail, causing an exhaust blow — a ticking or tapping noise at the front of the engine, often worse when cold. Left unrepaired, the noise worsens and gases can damage surrounding components. We replace manifold gaskets and repair downpipe joints.

Lambda / O2 Sensor Replacement

Lambda sensors (also called O2 sensors) measure the oxygen content of exhaust gases and feed information to the engine management system. A failed lambda sensor causes the engine warning light, poor fuel economy and rough running. Modern cars typically have two or more sensors. We diagnose which sensor has failed and replace it without replacing components that are still serviceable.

Exhaust Mounts, Hangers & Joints

Rubber exhaust hangers and clamp joints eventually perish and fail, causing the exhaust to drop, rattle against the underside of the car, or separate from the next section. This is a relatively minor repair but should not be ignored as a dropped exhaust can catch on the road surface and cause further damage. We replace rubber mounts and repair pipe joints quickly and affordably.

Warning Signs Your Exhaust Needs Attention

Some exhaust problems are obvious, others less so. Here's what to look and listen for.

Loud or Changed Engine Noise

A new droning, rattling or blowing noise that increases with engine speed is the classic sign of an exhaust fault — usually a flexi pipe failure, blown manifold gasket or a cracked section. Don't assume it's the engine.

Engine Warning Light

An engine management light related to emissions could indicate a failed lambda sensor, faulty CAT, blocked DPF or EGR fault. Our diagnostic equipment will identify which system has reported the fault.

Loss of Power / Poor Fuel Economy

A blocked DPF or severely leaking exhaust causes the engine to work harder, resulting in noticeably reduced power and higher fuel consumption. This is often dismissed as a general engine issue when the exhaust is the cause.

Visible Smoke or Strong Smell

Exhaust fumes entering the cabin, or an unusually strong smell from outside, can indicate a leak in the system. This is a safety issue as well as a mechanical one — get it checked promptly.

Rattling Under the Car

A rattle from underneath, particularly over bumps or at certain engine speeds, is often a heat shield, exhaust mount or the exhaust touching the car body due to a broken hanger. Usually a quick and inexpensive fix.

MOT Advisory or Failure

If your car has received an advisory or failed on exhaust condition, emissions, or a missing CAT in a previous MOT, it needs attention before the next test. We can repair the fault and arrange the MOT when it's ready.

The DPF Problem on City Cars

A diesel particulate filter (DPF) cleans itself by burning off accumulated soot at high temperature — a process called regeneration. This requires the exhaust to reach around 600°C, which typically needs a sustained motorway run of 20+ minutes.

If your diesel car is mainly used for short trips — school runs, local errands, commuting in town — the DPF never gets hot enough to regenerate. Soot accumulates, the DPF blocks, and you get the DPF warning light, limp mode and poor performance.

The solution is not always a new DPF. We can carry out a forced regeneration or professional DPF cleaning at a fraction of replacement cost. We diagnose the blockage level first so you know exactly what you're dealing with.

Important: A diesel car without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and it is illegal to remove one. We do not remove or delete DPFs. We repair and restore them.

An Honest Word About Modern Exhausts

We're a repair garage, not a parts replacer. On modern cars, a noisy exhaust is very often a £100–£200 flexi pipe weld or replacement — not a £600+ full system. A DPF warning light is often a £100–£200 clean — not a £1,000+ replacement.

We diagnose first, then quote. You always know what needs doing and why before we touch anything.

Exhaust Repair FAQ

A flexi pipe is a braided flexible section of exhaust, usually positioned between the manifold and catalytic converter, that absorbs engine movement and vibration. Without it, the constant movement of the engine would crack the rigid exhaust pipework. They fail because they operate in an extremely hot, constantly moving environment — the metal eventually fatigues and splits. It's the most common exhaust repair we see on modern cars.

Not necessarily. A DPF warning light most often means the filter is partially blocked from insufficient regeneration — common on diesels used mainly for short trips. In many cases, a forced regeneration or professional cleaning resolves the issue at a fraction of replacement cost. We diagnose the blockage level using our equipment before recommending a course of action.

Yes. MOT exhaust failure reasons include: excessive noise from a leak or missing section, a significant emissions leak, corrosion through the exhaust, a non-functioning or missing catalytic converter, a blocked or removed DPF on a diesel, or failing the emissions test. We can repair your exhaust and arrange the MOT retest, usually the same day.

Yes. Removing a DPF from a vehicle that was originally fitted with one, or removing a catalytic converter, is illegal in the UK. The vehicle will fail its MOT, and your insurance is likely invalidated. We do not carry out DPF or CAT removal. We repair and restore them.

Not necessarily. A rattle from underneath the car is very often a perished rubber exhaust hanger or a loose heat shield — both cheap and quick to fix. Even a failed flexi pipe usually doesn't mean the whole exhaust needs replacing. We inspect first, then advise. Most exhaust rattles on modern cars are minor repairs.

Most exhaust repairs — flexi pipe replacement, hanger repairs, manifold gaskets, lambda sensors — are completed the same day and often within a few hours. DPF cleaning and forced regeneration takes a few hours. More complex jobs such as full DPF replacement or CAT replacement may take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeframe when you book.
